Camp Wheeler History
Camp Wheeler was established in 1917 as a temporary training camp for National Guard units in Federal service. The camp was later used as an Infantry Replacement Training Center where new recruits received basic and advanced individual training to replace combat casualties. At the height of the training effort, the camp contained 17,000 trainees and 3,000 cadre personnel.
The camp was declared excess in 1946, and after a dedudding operation in the fall of 1946, the land was returned to the owners.

Currently, the site is used for a variety of purposes, including kaolin mining and forestry, and contains an industrial park and several housing subdivisions.

In March 2003, EOD Technology, Inc., an ordnance response contractor, performed an Engineering Evaluation and Cost Analysis (EE/CA) at Camp Wheeler to evaluate the presence of ordnance. Ordnance was found in five areas of the site.
The EE/CA recommended a Removal Action be performed in the five areas where ordnance was found. In the late January, a Removal Action will being in the Redbud Drive and Dogwood Road areas in Twiggs Counties.
